Clean Energy Efforts
In the Field: Case Studies
Georgia Power
Motto and Goal
Georgia Power is a large energy provider in metro Atlanta. While their energy sources do include traditional energy resources, they also include energy generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind. Home to a renewable energy development team, Georgia Power aims to continue to supply more energy in a clean, sustainable way. They are also working with the U.S. Forest Service to learn to reduce power plant emissions.
Georgia Power was not started in hopes of addressing the clean energy wicked problem, but they have taken more and more steps to do so as their customers demand it and as big companies looking to move to Georgia evaluate the availability of sustainable energy.
Georgia Power employs a wide range of skillsets. Some are technical, such as the workers at its nuclear power plants, while others rely more on humanities skills. Georgia Power enters discussions with companies seeking to move to Atlanta and questioning the available energy. Communication and persuasion skills are invaluable in this position as Georgia Power works to persuade the company that Georgia is the place to be. Further, interpersonal skills are necessary to work with Georgia Power’s individual customers in Georgia, particularly with customer service and activities like energy audits on a client’s house.
An entry level position at Georgia Power could look a variety of ways. I’ll focus on an entry level position in economic development because 1) this most closely relates to my field and 2) is what the employee with whom I spoke does. The entry level position in economic development would of course require some technical skills for economic analysis. However, communicating these findings to customers, potential companies moving to Georgia, other groups within Georgia Power, the government, and beyond is highly important. Clear and concise communication, engaging presentation skills, and writing skills would all be necessary for the entry level position. I would expect the entry level position to spend time performing analysis and compiling reports, as well as presenting these findings.
